For some of us, waking up before the sun is up or having to sleep in bedrooms that lack natural light has become the norm. However, waking up abruptly and suddenly going from a darkened room into the outside world can have a negative effect on your overall mood and well-being. You've probably experienced that effect anytime you've woken up feeling sluggish and already tired even before the day has started.
If you've never experienced the benefits of light therapy, you should know it can make a real difference to how you start your day. Philips has created a wide range of sunrise simulation alarm clocks, but the Philips Wake-Up Light HF3500 Sunrise Alarm Clock is among the most affordable, which makes it a great choice for first-time users or for those who just want to give light therapy a try.
PHILIPS HF3500 WAKE-UP LIGHT REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS
Gentle and realistic sunrise simulation
The principle is simple: in nature, daylight gets gradually brighter and human sensitivity to light does the rest. This light alarm imitates the sunrise process in real life by increasing the brightness of its yellow light.
Set up the alarm to your desired time, and the sunrise simulation process will start 30 minutes before that to ensure that you are fully awake by the time you need to.
Powered by long-lasting LED lights
The HF3500's light bulb is not replaceable, but there's hardly any need for that considering its lifespan. You can expect this LED light to to last for approximately 16,000 hours, which translates into over 80 years given that it's only in use for 30 minutes a day.
The light has a maximum light intensity of 200 lux, so when used at full brightness it gives off enough light to be used as a reading light. Moreover, brightness levels are adjustable and go from 1 to 10.
Light & Audio alarm
This light alarm comes with a regular beep alarm whose volume gradually increases over a period of 1.5 minutes. This is a useful back-up strategy if the light alarm alone is not enough. To to turn the sound alarm off, just tap the top of the alarm clock.
One thing to remember is that there is no option to disable the audio alarm. In most cases though, you will be fully awake due to to sunrise effect before the beep goes off. Moreover, the sound grille is at the back, so it should not feel as it was “in your face”, so to speak.
Although the LED-powered display cannot be completely switched off, its brightness levels are adjustable and can be dimmed or increased to suit every preference. Brightness settings go from 1 to 4 and can be easily adjusted using the control button right under the digital time display.
Philips has ample expertise applying light therapy to consumer products. There is a substantial amount of research behind the development of the Philips Wake-Up Light HF3500 Sunrise Alarm Clock, and independent clinical tests have shown the efficiency of this product.
Two research studies carried out in 2008 and 2011 revealed that the overwhelming majority of users interviewed claimed that using a Philips wake-up light helped them get out of bed easier and in a more pleasant way.
